Why Use a Text Messaging System


Occasionally I get asked the question: “Why would I spend more money on your text messaging platform when I have a gazillion text messages included for free in my mobile phone plan?”


The answer is simple. Mobile phones are fine for personal use, but if you’re running a business, and you want to incorporate text messaging into your customer service, customer engagement, marketing, lead generation and communication strategies, you simply cannot work with a screen that measures 6cm x 12cm. You need to be able to do more than just send text messages and receive replies.


Basically, a text messaging system turns your laptop, tablet, notebook, or desktop computer into a mobile phone. This provides the user with all of the flexibility and capability that implies – access to all of your data, files and campaign plans and strategies.


Pretty much everyone has received a text message appointment reminder from their physio, dentist or chiro, or a notification that a service is due from their mechanic, but using text messaging as a business tool is not just about sending messages and receiving replies.


Text messages have an open rate of 98% to 99% within 3 minutes. With 99% of mobile phone owners using smart phones, that means you can include a direct link to any online destination or phone number within your message.


It’s GOLD for marketing and for your customer engagement. A good quality text messaging platform should provide you with a range of options that make it easy to utilise your data, track your communication, and report on the results.


So what should you expect from a good quality system?

It should:

  1. Be quick and easy to set up and use;

  2. Be simple to upload or access your data;

  3. Provide the capacity to create multiple text message templates for regularly used messages;

  4. Automatically personalise your messages, not just with a name, but also with other information particular to the recipient – time, date, invoice number, dollar amount, workshop group, conference venue as a few examples;

  5. Provide the capacity to create multiple groups of people;

  6. Provide the capacity to filter your data to better target your text messages and sort your data;

  7. Provide the capacity to schedule messages for automatic later delivery;

  8. Provide the capacity to export lists of sent messages and replies so that you can utilise your data elsewhere

And one last comment.


If you’re using a system that incorporates text-messaging, and you find the functionality cumbersome, clunky, complicated and generally difficult to use, consider a stand-alone system that provides you with better options. Just accept that there will be one more step in uploading your data vs directly accessing it.
